Return to Homesteading

I know it's been forever since I've updated this blog. I fell off of the homesteading wagon for a while. So many things have happened in the last two years. What?! It's been 2 years! I can't really believe that I haven't posted here in that long.

Of course, I haven't too much better on my main blog One Crazy Momma It's hit and miss over there too. The main reason I fell out of blogging practice is when my father and several uncles all passed away in quick succession. You can read about that here

My homestead fell into major disarray in the past 2 years. It looked like this at the beginning of the year:

About half way through working on it:

And most currently:

Although it is and will forever be a work in progress, it is encouraging to see how far I've come in a few months.

Homesteading is and always be a lot of work. But it is work that I enjoy. Unfortunately, I won't be adding any animals to my homestead (other than Thor and Loki, the family pets) My neighbor would never agree to living next door to chickens and you have to consent from your neighbors where I live.

Crockpot Pork Chops with Creamy Gravy

It's Recipe Tuesday!

How are you all today?

It's errand and thrifting day for me today so before I head out the door, I like to start dinner in the crock pot.

Today's dinner recipe is Crockpot Pork Chops with Creamy Gravy

For this delicious dinner you will need:

8 Pork chops of your choice. I prefer the bone-in but the kids like boneless better.

2 cans of chicken broth

2 packets of pork gravy

2 packets of onion soup mix

2 cans of either cream of chicken soup or cream of mushroom soup ( I use 1 of each sometimes too)

Mix the broths, soups, and packets together in your crockpot. It'll look something like this:

Add in the pork chops to this sauce:

Cook for 6 to 8 hours on high. I just leave it on all day.  This is what my boneless chops look like when they are done:

Serve these with mashed potatoes and peas and you have a fantastic meal. If you would like a thicker gravy, add a flour and water paste to the liquid in the crockpot to thicken.

Well, it's time for me to go find the bargains at the thrift stores. I'll let you know what I find!

Lunch time....what is on the plate::::

I had a steak and cheese hot pocket for lunch today. Not the healthiest option but they are so yummy!

Looking around the house::::

I see the usual mess plus some extra. Another busy weekend, this time selling cookies for Girl Scouts.

On today's to do list::::

Laundry.... Two loads of towels, plus two loads of clothes need done today.

Cleaning.....

Office area and kitchen at the very least. But boy, I'm feeling unmotivated today..

Gardening... We had a hard freeze Thursday night/ Friday morning. I forgot to cover the potato and garlic plants out behind the cabana and I think they are too damaged to save. I'm going to leave them in the ground though and hope they decide to come back. Last week I also planted a pineapple top as well as 2 different black berry plants. This week I will be putting in several bulbs in the front yard as well as 2 rose bushes that have been waiting to get into the ground.

Crafting..... I am feeling really unmotivated. Maybe as the week wears on, I'll gather some steam.

Cooking.... There are some over-ripe bananas on the kitchen counter just crying to be made into banana bread. Other than that, I'm not sure what will be cooked or baked around here.

Currently reading::::
I finished the first book in the 4 book compilation Lancaster Brides by Wanda Brunstetter

On the TV today::::

I really didn't watch much tv today. Just an old episode of Emergency! Told ya I was unmotivated.

The weather outside is::::

Really nice today. The high is 81 low is 55. Just the way I like it. Wish it would stay this way all year. A little rain now and then is good too.

On the menu this week::::

Monday
Spaghetti

Tuesday

Wednesday

Breaded chicken and macaroni and cheese.

Thursday
Vegetable Soup

Friday
Pork Loin Roast and Parmesan Noodles

Saturday

Hamburgers and French Fries

Sunday

Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes

If I have a few minutes to myself, I will::::

Get out the sewing machine and check it over. It hasn't been used in a while.

New recipe I tried, or want to try this week::::

Nothing new planned this week.

One of my simple pleasures::::
Looking through all of the great pictures on Pinterest. You can see some of my favorites here.

Easy Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

Happy Frugal Friday, Ya'll!

Today I'm going to share with you my recipe for Easy Homemade Dishwasher Detergent.

I started to use homemade detergent as a money saving measure but I quickly found that it cleaned my dishes sooo much better than the store bought stuff.

I won't be going back to the store bought stuff, even if I can get it for free. I'm that happy with the way my homemade detergent works.

To  make your own dishwasher detergent you will need:

1/2 cup borax

1/2 cup washing soda

1/4 cup citric acid (Walmart carries this in the canning section)

1/4 cup salt (I use sea salt)

Mix all of these together. I do this in a ziploc bag because it will clump and harden if given the chance. Just knead the bag frequently for the first 48 hours. I then will store it in my glass jar. It is still usable if clumped up. It is just harder to get out of the jar.

To use, put about a tablespoon of detergent in your dishwasher. I also use vinegar as a rinse agent. It seems to work just as well without the vinegar on those occasions when I've forgotten to add it.

I hope you give this a try. Let me know how it works for you.

Homemaker Monday February 2, 2014

Lunch time....what is on the plate::::

Turkey sandwich with Larry the Cable Guy Chili Cheese Fries Potato Chips. Diet Dr. Pepper to wash it all down.

Looking around the house::::

I see too many projects that need done. A whole lot of cleaning to be done as well. But there is always a lot of cleaning on Mondays. :) That just means we had fun over the weekend, right?

On today's to do list::::

Laundry.... Several loads are waiting to be done, just like every other day. But this is a good thing, it means my family has an abundance of clothing to wear.

Cleaning..... The girls need some help with their room. It has gotten out of control (again) but it shouldn't be too long to get it cleaned up enough to be livable.

Gardening... The garden is looking pretty good right now. I have potatoes, onions, garlic, radishes, broccoli, corn, peas, beans, strawberries, tomatoes, celery and various flowers growing right now. I have even more potatoes, garlic, and strawberries to get in the ground. I also want to get some herbs going soon. The hard part is getting decent soil from the store. The sand just support a decent garden on its own.

Crafting..... Too many projects, too little time! I still haven't gotten back to the apron that I was working on here. I also want to get a few more things done this week. I MUST carve out some time!

Cooking.... Not cooking anything special today. Maybe next week...

Currently reading::::
I just finished reading The Cherry Cheesecake Murder by Joanne Fluke and now I'm going to start reading Lancaster Brides by Wanda Brunstetter

On the TV today::::

The food network has been on most of the day today. Everything looks so yummy! I particularly like The Pioneer Woman and Ina Garten today. I want to eat everything they've made..

The weather outside is::::

Perfect, especially compared to much of the rest of the country. Mid 70's today with a bit of rain for the garden this morning. Low humidity this time of year. It will probably go down into the high 30's tonight. Not cold enough to cover the plants.

On the menu this week::::

Monday
Spaghetti maybe with meatballs. I'm going to be using organic sauce and noodles for the first time tonight. Not sure if it will taste any different. I hope it tastes better!

Tuesday

Pot Roast in the crock pot. I love using the crock pot for roast. Eventually I will get the recipes posted for this.

Wednesday

Chicken although I haven't decided what type yet. The kids will probably want breaded chicken fingers but I'd prefer something different. :)

Thursday

Tacos!

Friday

Ham and Scalloped Potatoes

Saturday

We'll be eating out somewhere more than likely.

Sunday

Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes

If I have a few minutes to myself, I will::::

Read a book or work on a craft project.  I'm not sure though. I also like to spend some time on the Mary Jane's Farm website.

New recipe I tried, or want to try this week::::

Nothing new planned this week.

One of my simple pleasures::::
Watching the birds at the bird feeder in the backyard. Cardinals are regular visitors as well as bluejays. I haven't seen any robins heading back north yet. I see robins twice a year. In the fall when winter is coming up north and in the late winter when they are making their way back home. They came down early this year and aren't headed home yet.

Favorite photo from the camera::::

Not the best picture quality but I love my little garden. In the back you can see my clothesline. The pallets standing up are my compost pile.

Visiting with Blog friends (blog you want to share, blog post that caught your eye)::::
Haven't been visiting many blogs lately. I hope to spend some time visiting this week.
Quote of the week::::

The hurrier I go, the behinder I get...

This is from a neat little needlepoint wall hanging that I found at a local thrift store. It seems so true. The more I rush, the less I get done.

Enjoy your week!

Homemaker Monday -- October 27, 2014

Breakfast time....what is on the plate this morning::::

This morning was Half-Caff Coffee and toast with Cinnamon Butter. I thought a switch to butter from margarine was past due. Oh the cost, though..
Looking around the house::::
Way too much cleaning needs done just like every Monday. I guess that's the pay off for having fun on the weekend. I need to find the dining room table tonight or tomorrow.

On today's to do list::::

Laundry.... I won't be doing my usual 6 loads today. I think I'll get in 3 or 4 loads. My kitchen is demanding too much time today.

Cleaning..... Lots of cleaning, especially my kitchen. It is amazing how much mess the boys can make when left to their own devices for a day.

Homeschooling..... NOT GOING WELL... Grrr! Portfolio is due to the school district by Friday and it is NOT ready.

Crocheting..... Still no time...

Cooking.... Today is homemade chicken fingers, broccoli cheese noodles and green beans.

Currently reading::::

Haven't read anything all week. :( Still working on Mennonite in a Little Black Dress and quite a few downloaded Homesteading books on the Kindle.

On the TV today::::

I'm not sure if I'll turn on the tv today. I have tons to do and I am worn out..

The weather outside is::::

Beautiful!

Woke up to temps in the 50's and now this afternoon it is in the mid 80's with low humidity. I love this time of year! No need for A/C or heat. Just cold enough to have to snuggle at night. We may have to shut the back bedroom sliding door soon but not yet.

That's Fall in Florida for you.
On the menu this week::::

Homemade Breaded Chicken Fingers, Broccoli Cheese Noodles, and Green Beans

Tuesday
